Personality:

You think I don't want to save the girl, spare the village, and be a hero for once in my damn life? I spent half of my childhood in a hospital, where it didn't even occur to me to dream about having superpowers

Nate has always wanted to be a hero. He's also never felt like he was good enough to be one. By the time he turned six his family discovered he was hemophiliac and as a result he was extremely sheltered after that. His father would tell him stories of his grandfather, Henry Heywood, a member of the Justice Society. A hero. His father also berated him and made him feel worthless almost every moment of his life. Nate was a sensitive soul. He loves movies. He loves stories. But most of all, he loves history. He saw Indiana Jones and decided he wanted to be a historian just like him. That studying history could be another way to be a hero.

Because of his condition, and because of how his father treated him, Nate didn't ever dare to think he would have adventures of his own. The best he could do is study the adventures of other. But Nate is also extremely perceptive. He's extremely intelligent and knows history so well that he can pick up when something is amiss. It's that deductive reasoning that leads him to realizing that the Legends were in trouble, that history was being tampered with.

Still, once he gets a taste of adventure he becomes almost addicted to it, reckless in many ways. Despite his hemophilia he insists on being a part of the team -- and almost ends up dying because of it. Luckily, his future best friend, Ray Palmer, gave him a serum that made him super powered -- and also conveniently fixed his hemophilia with a healing factor. From then on he is almost constantly trying to prove himself. He wants to prove he can be a hero. He was never a soldier like his grandfather or father but he learns over time, especially in his interactions with his grandfather in the past (time travel is weird y'all) that there are a lot of ways to be a hero.

But even as he becomes bolder, as he helps to save and preserve time time and again, his feelings of inadequacy continue to come up. There's a scene in Season 3 where the demon Mallus takes the form of his grandfather and speaks out all of Nate's deepest insecurities. That he wasn't worth his grandfather's sacrifice. He's a disappointment to his father, to his grandfather. He doesn't deserve Amaya's love. While many of the others fight back against Mallus’ manipulations Nate allows this version of his grandfather to wail on him, because he deep down thinks he deserves it. Nate more than anything wants to be loved and accepted, and even though he finds that with the Legends he has a hard time truly believing he's worth it. And because he is so insecure about himself and where he stands with people, he tends to take rejection badly. This is scene especially when Amaya ghosts him the beginning of season 3. He acts out, downloads a bunch of dating apps, he's mean to her when she rejoins the team, gets drunk and almost gets half the team captured by P.T. Barnum. He becomes almost childish in his pain because when he's rejected he's taken back to how he felt like a child, worthless and alone.

Because he's often felt so alone, he's extremely loyal to his friends and will do pretty much anything for them. When Zari gets stuck in her groundhog day situation it's Nate who works with her the most not only to find a way to fix it -- but also so she doesn't go crazy in the process. He encourages even the more serious parts of their team to let loose and have fun. We know he's suggested team pizza parties, D&D, and a ship pet, among other things. He loves music and pop culture and often goes off on lectures about these things during their adventures. He's a nerd in almost every sense of the word and it's great to see over time as he realizes that there are people who appreciate that about him instead of making him feel shitty about it.

Of course, sometimes his enthusiasm can be overkill. He gets very invested in things and we've seen him sometimes skip days of sleep because of a theory he's working on. He also apparently has a fidget spinner and overall shows some classic signs of ADHD, even if canon has never actually diagnosed him as that.

One of the best parts of watching Nate in season 4, though, is watching how he's really flourished and grown as a character. He's sad Amaya left again, but he's much more mature about it this time around, he gets that it wasn't about him -- her destiny was bigger than the two of them. We also see how he's grown as they integrate his father, Hank, into the main plot as Nate takes time off from the Legends and begins working for the Time Bureau. His father ridicules him and talks down to him still, but with the support of his friends he does something he's never done before: he stands up to him. He tells his father that just because he's different from his father doesn't mean he doesn't have value. He's a superhero, and his father can't even see the value in that. But that's okay. Because Nate's finally begun to see the value of himself. And his friends and family see the value in him. And that's what matters. To the point where he's willing to sacrifice himself to save his best friend, Ray, and the world.

It also seems to have neutralized the hemophilia he grew up with, but any nerfs on that I am willing to play with, him sometimes having to contend with hemophilia again could be really interesting to play with.
